Student Design Competition Co-Chairs: Charles Baylis and Dimitrios Peroulis

At IMS 2014, we celebrate the tenth year of student design competitions! As in years past, the 2014 International Microwave Symposium in Tampa will feature a broad variety of these design competitions for students. The first student design competition at the IMS was held in 2005 in Long Beach, California, and was a high-efficiency, power-amplifier design competition featuring three student competitors. Figure 1 illustrates the number of student design competitions since 2005.

This year, eleven student design competitions will be featured. The design competitions are managed by the Technical  Committees (TCs) of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society, and many of the TCs are sponsoring competitions this year. The competitions vary in their themes from radar to circuit design and transistor modeling. In addition, a new competition involves “microwave app” design, a tool promoting and educating in the area of microwave engineering.

All student design competitions will take place on Tuesday, June 3, 2014, with the competition winners recognized at the Student Awards Luncheon on Thursday, June 5, 2014. Student competitors should be aware that the IMS will not assist participants in getting necessary equipment or designed circuits/systems into the United States.

The deadline for submitting your application to the competition coordinators is Tuesday, 1 April, 2014.

The application process is specific to each competition. See the "additional details" link for the competition in which you are interested, and provide the requested information.

General Rules:

  1. To enter a competition, the student or students must have been full-time (enrolled for a minimum of nine hours per term as graduate students or twelve hours per term as undergraduates) during the time the work was performed.
  2. The students must submit a signed statement from their academic advisor that the work is principally the effort of the students.
  3. The students must submit entry materials by Tuesday, 1 April, 2014. The "additional details" link for the competition of interest lists the required information.
  4. The students must register for and attend the conference to present their designs for evaluation at IMS2014.
  5. The students should use the email address issued by their respective institutions for all communication regarding the competitions, rather than their personal emails (e.g., Gmail, Hotmail).
